One of the signature staples of the Chunky Armadillo brand is finding vintage junk that no one wants anymore and putting a creative spin on it that turns it into something to be treasured. There’s just something magical about taking what’s been lost and discarded as the raw materials for some new vision or inspiration
Founder Melanie Hutchins started “junking” with her husband years ago in search of raw materials for furniture and decor she was upcycling in her spare time. They crafted beautiful, vintage items with a gritty urban appeal that seemed to fly off the shelves at her retail booth in the Frisco Mercantile in Texas. They painted wooden shims and fanned them out around discarded mirrors, assembled rusty gears into sculptural chandeliers, and turned discarded bits and pieces of junk into elaborate bead necklaces for a one-of-a-kind look that became the signature style of Chunky Armadillo.
Melanie continues this trend today with unique furniture pieces available in her store on North High Street in Columbus’ Short North Arts District. An old airplane engine casing became a round coffee table with a textured wood surface. The front hood and grill of a vintage Ford pickup truck became a working desk. Not to mention, the walls of the short north shop are lined with road signs, elk antlers, and upcycled decor of all shapes and sizes.
“The main theme is free expression of yourself in a kind of clash of old and new,” explains our founder. “There’s something cultural and cool about using the old stuff and making it fresh and new and real.”
If a rustic, vintage aesthetic is your jam, definitely come check out our upcycled furniture and gifts. We’re open 6 days a week on High Street!
